Interview mit Daniel von Har

Bands like Primordial, Harakiri For The Sky or Rotting Christ show that good Black Metal does not only come from Scandinavia. Black Metal from Israel is still rather exotic. HAR come from Israel, release their second EP „Visitation“ these days and play harsh Black Metal with a trace of Death Metal. Guitarist Daniel took the time to answer some questions about the band, their current release and the concept behind HAR.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer a few questions. I suppose that most of our readers haven’t heard about HAR yet, please introduce yourself.
We are HAR, a 5-piece band from Tel Aviv City, Israel.
What is the meaning of the Band’s name?
HAR means „mountain“in Hebrew. It is an obscure object that occurs in different cultures as a place for sacrificial rituals and black magic such as Walpurgisnacht. But also as a strategically good place in war. And it also sounds obscure…..
Your current release is called „Visitation“. Is there a special meaning behind it?
„Visitation“ as the appearence of a horrifying and sublime being, just sounds right to us as a general concept for this record and the way it builds up from the intro to the ending.
Something about the songwriting; is any member involved or only one or two of you?
The writing process goes through every member in one way or another. It might happen that one of us will put forth the main theme.
Are there any special reasons for the choice of the cover, perhaps in view on the lyrics, and who is responsible for the artwork?

The cover is a result of a collaboration between our music and Karmazid who is in our opinion one of the most original illustrators out there. It is  him going more free-form while listening to our music and we really like the result. It adds another dimension to the whole thing and it does depict a „Visitation“  in our eyes.
Is there any special concept on that album? If there is, what`s the idea behind it?
In terms of lyrics the concepts revolve around gnosis and at the same time unleashing a bestial nature.
The first Song on „Visitation“ is called „A Shadow Henosis“. The Definition of „Henosis“ is a mystical Union or Unity with the fundamental being in reality. So would do you mean with the term „Shadow Henosis“?
Shadow Henosis“ will be then the practice of reaching a dark and negative unity through destruction and war.

In 2014 you released your first EP „Baal Ha’Ov“. How would you describe your development since then?

The process from the first recording was just of adding another guitar player which changed the dynamics in the writing process and than just experimenting in this new constellation.
„Visitation“ is the precursor of your upcoming Debut Album. Can you tell us something about this upcoming record? Did you already start writing songs for it?

We have some ideas for the next recording. It seems like it will be heavier but as a development of some themes in „Visitation“.
As a band from Israel, you are surely often compared to Melechesch. Did they inspire you in any way?
We were never compared to Melechesh. Not that we know about. Anyway some of us like their first two albums.

What is it like to be a Black Metal Band in Israel? Are you confronted with any problems?

We havent confronted any problems as a metal band in Israel. Israel is a shitty place in lots of aspects but its not *Yet* a full on theocracy. In terms of music there was nott alot going on in Metal for us, there are other circles of Metal but they dont appeal to us. But lately there is more interest in the sound and some friends who also play in bands that we like (and some of us play or played in) started doing their own shows under the name Evil Eye and are bringing bands who we all find more relevant, like Grave Miasma, Dead Congregation and Venenum.
Can you recommend us other good Bands from Israel?

These are bands that we share with some musical tastes and ideas with:
Sonne Adam, Venomous Skeleton, Kever, Mortuus Umbra, Tangorodrim.
Are there any plans about touring in Europe in the near future?

We plan on playing some european shows hopefully from around the end of August – September but we dont have anything confirmed yet. Anyone interested is welcome to contact us.

I would like to end the interview with the traditional Metal1. info-Brainstorming: I’ll give you a few words, and you just tell me what you think of first:

  • Trump
  • Germany
  • Fans
  • Vinyl
  • Har in 10 years

Fuck that Shit!

Thanks for the interview.
