Interview mit An Autumn For Crippled Children

Deutsche Version lesen

AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN recently released „Eternal“, an impressively emotional album which is far from generic standard Blackgaze. In the following interview with the band, you will learn more about how the Post-Black-Metal-musicians would call their own music, if they are in contact with other musicians despite them keeping their identities a secret and what „Eternal“ is about.

an-autumn-for-crippled-children5The music of AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN is mostly categorized as Post-Black-Metal. Even though you still got many of this genres typical characteristics, the term doesn’t seem to be sufficient enough to describe it. What’s your opinion on this matter?
We don’t really like the whole ‚post‘ name. We started out as Black Metal mixed with Doom/Death. We evolved into something else. I don’t know, ‚mood‘ music? I don’t like categories in music, to be honest.

I want to congratulate you on your newest album „Eternal“, it’s once again really impressive and emotional! Where do you spot the differences between this album and the ones before it, especially in comparison with „Lost“?
With „Lost“ we were still looking for our own sound. This new album has a lot of really good melodies and some pretty good songs. That is, in our own humble opinion. Every album has a certain feeling. Every album is tied to a specific time and place. Every album means something different to us.

How was „Eternal“ received by fans and critics?
I don’t really read reviews. I’d rather hear what fans have to say, but what I have read so far was pretty good, I think. Some people seem to think our albums sound the same or tracks sound the same. Uh, that’s OUR style!

an-autumn-for-crippled-children1The cover-artwork of „Eternal“ isn’t as charmingly beautiful as „Try Not To Destroy Everything You Love“ and not as harsh and cold as „The Long Goodbye“ but could rather be described as „withering“. In which way does the artwork of „Eternal“ reflect its music and lyrics?
„Eternal“ kind of deals with getting older and things that change. The withered sun flower represents the fact that (almost) nothing is eternal.

Which track on „Eternal“ is the personally most important one to you?
The first and the last one. The first one deals with loss of youth. The last one deals with people close to our hearts.

While other bands within the Post-Black-Metal-genre often write songs which are over ten minutes long, the songs of AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN are relatively short, especially since your second album. Why is that so?
We like short to the point songs without a lot of extra things.

„Eternal“ is your sixth album in just seven years. Do you even got time for anything other than writing and recording music?
We all got lives and work. We just get together some times during breaks/holidays and write songs/albums.

Since you’re so quickly releasing new music, it would seem as if you never got anything like a writer’s block. Don’t you ever got times in which you run out of ideas?
Not really, but we are taking a little break right now. Maybe not too long, if the ‚fire‘ lights up again soon.

Will the next album also follow its predecessor as soon as the ones before?an-autumn-for-crippled-children2
I don’t think so.

As AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN you’ve kept your real identities a secret right from the very beginning. Do you nevertheless got contact to other bands and musicians?
Yeah, of course, but only really close people know that we do AN AUTUMN FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN.

Are there any other bands from the Netherlands that you approve?
I have no idea. I don’t really follow the dutch scene since the 90’s.

Well then, it would seem that this interview is slowly coming to an end. At last, I’d like to ask you to take part in our traditional Metal1.info-Brainstorming. Please tell us what comes to your mind while reading the following terms:
Mountains: Like ‚em.
